Why Being a Go-Giver is the Ultimate Business Strategy

Is it bad or good to give away a lot of stuff for free?

By that I mean, doing free trainings, free coaching, free resources?

Will you be discounting your worth when you give out free stuff?

Will you attract ‘freebie seekers’ that will never pay?

If I give too much away, won’t it be hard for me to charge people?

Won’t I be giving away all of my secrets?

In my experience: “the more I give away, the more that comes my way”.

If you know me I’m a nerd about abundance and any worries about giving aways stuff for free comes from a scarcity mindset, let’s blow up some of these limiting beliefs:

Freebie seekers – yes, there are those people who will resist paying for anything. But why should I not try to help them? The truth is, the people who are unwilling to pay for anything end up hurting themselves the most because they try to figure out everything on their own.

While its not a good I idea to give away too much 1x1 time to people who are unwilling to invest in themselves, when I don’t ‘keep score’ there are always plenty of people who will. I also love having evergreen assets (lead magnets, recordings of trainings, templates or workbooks) that I can send someone who is stuck.

Should I guard my ‘secrets’? – There was a time in sales where I kept all my sales ‘secrets’ to myself. Eventually I started sharing all my best practices with the people who I was competing with for the same business. That’s when my sales started to really explode.

I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of ‘secrets’ anyway, things are always evolving and by sharing your best practices it commits you to evolving and growing.

If you give away too much, will people still pay you? Absolutely! Instead of looking at your content as free vs. paid, maybe look at it through the lens of how closely you are working with someone.

With all the people out there grabbing for attention, I’d say it’s a must to offer your audience some free value so they can sample what you have to teach.

If you do it right, you’ll always have people that are more than willing to pay for a higher lever of service like group or 1x1 coaching. I’m one of them! Last year by far my biggest expenses were my financial and marketing coaches that I get to spend time with each and every week. Take my money!!!!

Will I be discounting my worth if I give away free stuff? That’s up to you. NO ONE can define your worth other than you. I love giving away value but that takes nothing away from me. In fact, I’d argue that it’s the opposite, it takes a lot of confidence to give a lot away without worry.

If I coach someone on a sales call, will they expect me to always give away free coaching? I’ve heard people say you should NEVER coach on a call otherwise they’ll expect you to give away stuff for free.

Again, not true. If someone hops on a sales call with me, I make it a point to drop value no matter what decision they make. It’s totally up to you but I want anyone who hops on a call with me to feel like they got something out of it.

One of my favorite mentors said, “Give away 90% of what you know for free, charge for the rest.” That mentor is coming up on 8 figures in his business this year.

LinkedIn tip of the week:

Launching something (newsletter, lead magnet, new podcast, webinar, course)? Don’t forget to set up a ‘LinkedIn event’ and use that to market the landing page of whatever you want! Make sure to create an enticing headline that gets people interested.

You can set it up the same way you put up a post: Select ‘create a post’, then click on the 3 dots (…), then select ‘create an event’, then select ‘external link’. Boom, drop your landing page right in there!

After its set up, you can personally invite whoever you want and it will drop into their LinkedIn notifications!
