I was always told “if you want to be successful, you need to go to school, work hard and get a good job”. I hated school and working hard didn’t sound like too much fun…so I never thought I would be successful.
I didn’t realize it at the time but my life would change because my friend asked me to be a dishwasher with him at the Salt Lake Country Club where all the wealthiest people hung out. I told him “I don’t want to be a dishwasher, but can I be a bus boy”?
It was a minor step up from washing dishes to clearing and scraping dishes, but it put me in a position where I could be around successful people who would one day mentor me. I worked my way up to waiter, bartender then manager and became friends with people who had made it in life, and most of them were incredibly kind and down to earth.
Eventually my boss knew I had an entrepreneur in me so he gave me 2 months pay and booted me out because I was too afraid to leave on my own. I crashed hard, went into massive debt and almost went bankrupt.
But in 2005, with no other options, I created my first real online business and within one year paid of nearly $100k in debt.
Each week I send out a newsletter to my tribe that I do my best to pack with value and stuff it with tips & tricks around entrepreneurship, mindset, sales & marketing!
I had finally found some measure of success. After years and years of trying and failing, I had a breakthrough. I started my own real company, not just any company but an online business that allowed me to work from home. It got me out of debt and taught me about entrepreneurship and marketing. It was an e-commerce site that allowed me to sell products that I never even touched (drop shipping) and it felt like magic.
When I was young, I never felt like I could make my parents proud, and during high school I never felt quite like I fit in. I had a hole inside of me that I didn’t know was there and started seeking accomplishment to fill in the gap. I also became a DJ and got addicted to the nightlife, hanging out and partying and trying to live the Rockstar lifestyle.
I also figured out that I was quite strong on a bike and got a late start into competitive bike racing. I’d get up late, work for 5 or 6 hours, then go out and train on my bike for 2-3 hours, then DJ or live up the night life scene and be out late at night. I also ate like crap, did recreational drugs and drank a lot.
At 38 years old, I gave up the party scene and got married, but my business was failing and I was sinking yet again. On top of that, we had just taken in a boy who had been neglected and abused.
My business had come crashing down and with no degree or diplomas, the only card I had to play was getting a job in corporate America. We had just taking in a 1 year old boy who was neglected and abused and soon after that found ourselves in a legal battle to keep him safe. We were barely scraping by as it was but the legal bills started piling in. The game changer was being in sales where I was in control of my income.
Over the next 7 years, I hit Presidents Club (top 10% in sales) a record 7 straight years in a row. I learned how to sell without selling. I became obsessed with mindset and personal development. Everything was working out the way I wanted, until March 18th, 2020 when COVID sent us home and shut down hospitals for several months.
With our business crashing down, I needed to have a backup plan. I was starting to grow my voice and following on LinkedIn and started bringing inbound coaching clients in. After that, other coaches were asking me to help them with strategy so I built my first course. In 2021, I was asked by one of the most Elite coaching programs in the world to help their coaches with digital marketing strategy.
In 2022, the circle became complete. A two decade cycle of ups and downs, of business, marketing, promoting and selling lead me to the exact place where I needed to be. I didn’t expect I would be here, and it wasn’t what I would have picked, but coaching found me and I love it.
